Tagged

Thanks to Carol for giving me a chance to spice up this blog a bit. She "tagged" me which means I am supposed to post the fourth picture from the fourth folder of photos I have on my computer. So here you have it: Maggie at her finest. Most of you know our dog has quite the personality and this picture captures her ability to be cute, pathetic, and bizarre all at the same time. We took this picture the first winter we lived here in Montana in the townhouse. Considering she had an old 80's era doggie sweater we inherited when we got her, I decided to sophisticate her wardrobe with a Woolrich quilted doggie jacket since she insisted on shivering if she didn't have anything on but her fur. And yes, she actually would fall asleep in that position.
Now it's my turn to play "it" so I'm tagging blogworthymoments and selfdebasement (as if Jen will actually ever post anything new).

Just kidding

No bath for me. Madeleine puked just now and got the bath instead. Honest to goodness, I don't know how much more I can take.

Strong to the finish

Here's the latest on Madeleine:

She threw up once Sunday evening and once Monday late afternoon, at which point I called the doctor and scheduled an 8:30am appointment for this morning. When she woke up today she had diarrhea too. After being examined by the nurse, the PA, and her pediatrician, it was decided that Madeleine's body is taking 10 times as long to process this bug as my adult body did, meaning she may have diarrhea for the rest of the week but hopefully that should be the end of it. She didn't throw up today and ate quite a bit of toast and banana, along with some of our normal dinner and lots of water. Her liver count was high enough, according to the ER blood work, that the pediatrician was going to ask around about it's relationship to the virus. If she thinks we need to have blood drawn again in two weeks she'll call us.

So we had an early morning with the dr.'s appointment which was followed by a furniture mix-up where the store we've ordered a bunch of furniture from forgot to grab the hutch we bought. So they set up part of our order and will bring the hutch tomorrow morning. Then Justin called to say the Jeep died on his way to the DMV. We had to have it towed and have the alternator replaced then pick the Jeep up by 5pm. In the meantime I had to get the kids ready to pick up Justin, run to the grocery store to pick up some more bread and gatorade for Madeleine, and make it to the shop to pick up the Jeep so I could make it to my 5:15 hair appointment that I had already rescheduled once because of Madeleine being sick this past Saturday (a long but informative sentence, I know). I did get an hour of kid-free bliss before heading home to a house of chaos where Parker now refuses to fall asleep without an hour and a half of fussiness and Madeleine freaks out if the Elmo's World theme music isn't playing on the TV. But now the kids are finally asleep and I'm going to take a bath. I'm so glad there are only a few more days in February; I can't wait for March!

One for the scrap book

I called the doctor on call last night around 5pm because since waking up from her nap Madeleine couldn't even keep water down. She was lethargic, in distress, had a fever and an accelerated heart rate. After hearing this, he suggested we take her to the ER to be rehydrated and to get some anti-nausea medicine. Little did I know my first trip to the ER would be for my not-quite 2 year old.
Of course Justin started puking right around 6pm which meant we had to ask our dear friends Beth and Cody to babysit Parker for us. They were gracious to let me bring him over there for the first half of the night. I dropped him off on my way to the hospital with Madeleine.
She was quite the trooper, all things considered. They had to draw blood and tried twice to get it from her arm but she was so dehydrated they couldn't find her veins. They finally found one in her hand and after three pokes (which she bravely tolerated) she was hooked up to the IV.

They gave her 500mL through the IV and she ate three popsicles and drank 16oz. of water. They also gave her some medicine to keep her from vomiting which she did once after eating the first popsicle. The transformation in her attitude after receiving the IV was amazing, in spite of how late it was. She danced when my phone rang, she wanted to put stickers on her bandaged hand, she laughed when I read her books, etc. I had almost forgotten how funny she can be after these last four days of sickness. She also learned two new words: sick (which she used in reference to needing to throw up) and IV.
We were able to come home at 11:30pm (after picking up Parker) and she slept 12 hours and soaked her bed with an overfull diaper. Although it's kind of gross, I was relieved to see she was again hydrated enough to urinate. She acted like her peppy self this morning and ate more popsicles and had more Pedialyte, all without throwing up! Hooray!!! Parker continues to be doing really well and hasn't shown any signs of sickness. Justin has started to perk up and ate some toast today. It looks like we may kick this thing before too much longer. Thank you again so much for your prayers and support over this past week! I look forward to sharing more fun things in the not too distant future.

Inevitable

So I finally caught Madeleine's ick. Fortunately I got most of it over with last night (I hope) and have kept 64oz. of liquid down this morning. Parker has had to learn how to drink from a bottle because I'm not producing much breastmilk; at least I had some extra in the freezer for him. Justin continues to feel fine and there's no sign Parker feels sick. I am really looking forward to having a normal weekend one of these days.

No sleep for the weary

Madeleine's still sick but there's nothing the doctor can do for her unless she gets so dehydrated she needs an iv. She's currently napping because she only got about 5 hours of sleep. Parker still seems well despite refusing to sleep last night. Justin and I took turns going in the kids' rooms and doing laundry. I went to the store early this morning for another set of sheets for Mad's crib. I don't want to keep doing 4 loads a day. Justin's at work trying to function like a normal person. We both got about 4 hours of sleep. I'd be sleeping right now but Parker decided to wake up from a nap as soon as I got Madeleine down. And I always wondered what would be the catalyst for getting a head full of gray hair. Now I know. Thanks for your prayers.

My end of the bargain

Thanks to all of you for proving to me that blogging is so much more than posting a picture and sharing a story: it's about creating community and you have helped me to see exactly how expansive and supportive my community of friends can be! So thank you for all of your kind words.

Now back to business.

I know I promised an update on Parker and that's still coming but we've had some more immediate parenting issues. Madeleine has been vomiting for the last 24 hours. She had a 10-hour reprieve this afternoon (including a 5 hour nap...we were up with her most of the night) but commenced spewing at 8pm tonight. How does one explain the "way" to throw up to a 2 year old? She understands the words themselves but can't bring herself to actually just spit out everything. Instead she ends up swallowing bile back down which starts the process all over again. I winced feeling her little body convulse in my arms as the dry heaves began. No one enjoys throwing up but seeing your little child suffer is even worse. Then she said she was thirsty. She cried and cried asking for water and milk. Again, how do you reason with the parched throat and empty belly of a 2 year old? She doesn't understand because she's always allowed to have these drinks; why not now? I'm hoping she'll fall asleep easily tonight with no more incidents and if she wakes up we'll give her a few sips of pedialyte. The doctor on call said a lot of viral infections have been going around so she wasn't surprised to hear about Madeleine's case. Fortunately Madeleine has had a few wet diapers so we know she's still hydrated. I'm fervently praying Parker stays well...

That leads me to Mr. P as we affectionately call him. Wouldn't you know the little bugger has TWO teeth?!? It was Tuesday of last week that I first realized he was teething in the first place because that little white speck wasn't spit up in his mouth; it was a broken-through tooth! Parker continues to teach me that just because you have one kid that means the second will fall the pattern of the first! Madeleine began teething at 7 months and slept through the night at 2 months. Unlike his big sister however, Parker is willing to let most anyone hold him as long as they smile and make silly faces. He really enjoys playing in the jumperoo as well. You can laugh at my attempt to get a picture of his teeth; the best shot is the last one. And as you can see, he carries his favorite teething toys with him: his fingers!

We are still struggling with sleep. I'm almost ready to try a spoonful of cereal before bed to see if that helps. But as it stands, Justin and I aren't getting sleep anyway with both of the kids sharing my cold (which I've now had for 12 days but I think it's really going away this time) and now with Madeleine puking. We do love this job of his though because he was able to take a half day of sick leave last week and a sick day today.

I have a video to post but it's not downloaded to the computer yet so I'll leave you in suspense for that one but I do have a few new family photos from our first official hike with Parker that we took two weeks ago. It had snowed the night before and left one of our favorite trails up the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area completely blanketed. It was a delight to be out, especially considering the sickness that followed.

One more thing. We are now the proud owners of an indoor-outdoor kitty. No, despite Madeleine's attempts to get me to adopt a new kitty at Petsmart, I'm talking about our good ol' family feline Oreo. We took her to the vet today to get her vaccinations updated so she can terrorize the neighborhood squirrels instead of us. She's already tried to make friends with a neighbor's cat who came over to hiss at her. I practiced some parenting skills in defending Oreo's right to play in our driveway by chasing that cat away. Big tough Mama, that's me! I'm not keen on the dirt she'll bring inside but it's way better than risking her scratching the new couches because she's bored.

That's the skinny on us. More as soon as I have time and energy. Thanks again to all of you for sharing your hearts with us!
