Why? Because I'm pregnant

I just finished 2 hours of cutting up fresh pineapple, cantaloupe, peaches, kiwi, and strawberries. Am I craving fruit, you ask? No, those were just the tasks I had been putting off. Instead, I'm having espresso mocha ice cream. Why? Because I'm pregnant silly :) In my defense I did have a strawberry-orange smoothie earlier so I did get some fruit in, although I didn't have my normal breakfast of yogurt, blueberries, and granola. It was market day and I was wooed by a chocolate-chocolate scone.

This is what happens when the boys go away to play! Justin should be home tomorrow afternoon. I really have no earthly idea why I agreed to let him go out camping and fishing for three nights; it must have been a weak hormone moment. I don't plan on approving of this sort of trip again for a long, long time. I truly enjoy Madeleine and we can have lots of fun together but her nap schedule has been completely off which means her attitude is off too. She did like the stuffed pepper stuffing I made for dinner tonight. I intentionally made a meal that I knew Justin would be upset finding out he missed. I am capable of some really low blows, aren't I? On that note, I'm off to watch a movie I know he also wants to see. Ha ha ha!!! Malicious Melinda strikes again.

Bathing suit or wrestling uniform?

Another summer has come and once again Madeleine's bathing suit is too small. A year ago I crammed her into a super cute ladybug outfit. I barely kept it on her one hour because her chub was being pinched by the elastic. Today I tested the flamingo suit only to discover it didn't quite fit as I expected. Here she is "playing" in the backyard.

All geared up for the wrestling tournament.

Mentally preparing for the big match.

I'll show you who's boss Mr. Sprinkler!

Challenging a call made by the ref.

Dejected after suffering a humiliating loss.

Back on the sidelines with her coach.

Daddy's diva

Justin had fun doing Madeleine's hair the other evening after her bath. Dad's can get away with anything!

Well child--children--checkups

Madeleine had her 15th month appointment yesterday. Here's the breakdown:

Height: 32.5" (97%)
Weight: 23.4lbs. (50%)
Head circ.: 47cm (75%)

She continues her trend of being quite the string bean. Fortunately, although she's technically underweight for her height, she's maintained the same growth curve since she was born so the pediatrician isn't concerned. She also got two shots: one for chicken pox and one for tetanus. This means we're shot free for her 18th month appointment! Hooray, especially considering Junior could possibly be around by then if he comes early. Yikes!

Junior and I also had an appointment today. Things continue to look really good. I've decided that if we get pregnant again I will only agree to doing so if I'm not pregnant during the dark days of winter here in Montana. I am far healthier this time around and my weight gain to date is half of what it was last time. When pregnant with Madeleine, I overindulged all of the time, mostly to appease my raging hormones. I feel much more even keel this time around even with so many life events up in the air.

We continue to wait to hear news about the job situation. Once that happens we can make decisions about where to live. Justin is trying to distract himself during this waiting period by going fishing and camping. I hope it helps him. I feel very much at peace with everything and know that whatever happens will be in the best interest of all parties (but you can still pray that we stay here in Missoula if you want!).

Time for change

I'd had it with my long hair. I realized it would take me another year to get it as long as I wanted and all of my patience went out the window. So here's the final result.

Before: As you have probably noticed, most of the time I've been "styling" my hair in the messy bun fashion on top of my head...not exactly the classiest look.

After: Shorter and sassy. I'm thrilled with it :)

Camping with the Clines

We returned yesterday from our first camping excursion of the year. We felt brave enough Tuesday to take Madeleine (and Maggie) up Rock Creek for a night in the great outdoors. We found a great campsite with lots of signs of moose and far enough from the "creek" (more like a raging torrent currently) to be safe.

Overall, it was a great time. We took two tents: one for Justin and Maggie and one for Madeleine and me. While next time I think we'll put Madeleine in a tent by herself, it was a fairly successful experiment. She went to bed really easily and only woke up in the middle of the night when I was trying to zipper her sleeping bag up. Then she realized how cool I am and wanted to play. She quickly changed her mind about my coolness when she banged herself in the head with the flashlight. Justin wasn't too far away but didn't hear the slight distress in our tent. Madeleine and I did spend about an hour and a half awake together with me trying to help her relax enough to fall back asleep. But every time my hand stopped stroking her head or rubbing her back, her head would pop up off the mat and we'd start the process all over with me barely staying awake.

I was really glad to see sun on the tent in the morning because that meant we had both fallen back asleep for at least half of the night. It got quite chilly during the night, hence my anxiety about keeping her warm and the subsequent "play time" we had and I ended up using an extra fleece blanket to keep me warm enough. We had hoped to go for a hike before leaving but Madeleine was extra sleepy after the interrupted night and we decided it would be best not to test the situation. She slept on the way home and later took a 3 hour nap. We learned a few lessons about what to do differently and look forward to implementing those maybe next week!

(This is the fairyslipper flower I found by the creek...a wonderful find!)

The youngest ultrahiker

Madeleine loves to walk...so much so that she vehemently protests when we put her in the backpack to go hiking. Today we decided to let her walk for the first part of the trail. Half a mile later she was still going strong and uninterested in being carried. We paused creekside to distract her and cool off her hot feet then proceeded to torture her by strapping her into the backpack. Last week she walked our cemetery dog-walk without being carried and that's over 1 mile!

We enjoy watching her explore the world one stick, rock, and flower at a time; however, when it's over 80 degrees outside and we're poking along in the sun, at times mom and dad have to take charge again. She got to see her first snake today and some new flowers but I won't bore you with those pictures. Instead, here is the trooper who looks like she may take after her Grampi some day and do some ultra-races!

Saturday in Montana

Madeleine and I had a delightful time going to and exploring the various downtown markets this morning. She shared my cinnamon roll, which by the way, was bigger than my face! We perused the various vendors and finally bought a bag of dried local apples. They have become a favorite treat of mine as they are easy to carry around in the car and on hikes, not to mention they are a healthy alternative to granola bars and other sweet stuff.

Justin had a great day fishing even though he didn't reel anything in (hence no pictures). He says he got one on his line but it got off before he could pull it out of the water. We all enjoyed the mild temps and sunshine regardless of where our time was spent!

Goodbye snow...hello sunshine!

We've waited a long time for seasonal temperatures but they finally arrived today! We're expecting highs in the low to mid 70s for at least a whole week. Of course we celebrated by going for another hike today (yes I did find more wildflowers I may eventually share with you) and I went out for milkshakes with my friend Beth.

Earlier this week, even though it was cold and rainy, we let Madeleine experience Dairy Queen for the first time. She was rather dubious about the baby cone they gave us but she quickly warmed up to sharing my blizzard. Maggie was the fortunate beneficiary of the unwanted baby cone. Maggie also licked up the remnants of ice cream Madeleine wore on her face.

Justin is going out fishing all day tomorrow with a friend and they're taking the Subaru (the vehicle of ours that gets the best gas mileage) which leaves me with the Jeep and Madeleine. While we've discovered she enjoys taking quick trips around town in her car seat in the Jeep, I'm not thrilled to have it as my only option so I think we'll go to the Farmer's Market on foot tomorrow. It should be a beautiful day for it anyway.

June snow. No, it's not the name of a flower

Yes, it's June 10th and we're expecting 2 to 4 inches of snow tonight! It snowed earlier today and stuck for a little while but melted quickly. And wouldn't you know it's supposed to be in the 70s by the end of the week! I guess I'd rather be in our situation than enduring the heat so many of you are getting back East. It's ironic though that we're busy running our heat while you have the AC on full blast. Our neighbor across the street just had his central air unit installed yesterday and today. We made sure to make fun of him :)

Photo update

Madeleine took quite the tumble on Monday morning. I didn't think a little trip into the back of a chair leg would result in a bright purple bruise and bump but it did. You can kind of see it over her right eye. It became a huge welt immediately and Justin had to read her some stories to calm her down and help her stop crying. Oreo came to Madeleine's aid as well. I think the cat was born outside of a rather lousy karaoke bar because she always come running whenever Madeleine screams/cries, I whistle or sing, and when Justin plays his harmonica. It's not a compliment any way you cut it but it's kind of endearing. I just wish she'd quit drooling whenever she purrs that much!

This one is a good example of Madeleine's crazy morning hair.
Maggie and Madeleine love each other.

Per Carol's request, Justin finally took new pictures of me and my growing belly. I said goodbye to my feet a few weeks ago.

Out of our hands

Justin mailed off his application for the Missoula Vet Center job this afternoon. The job closes on the 12th and we don't expect to hear anything right away so we're trying to decide how to keep ourselves distracted in the meantime.

Tomorrow we have an appointment to see a few homes in the area with our realtor; that should give us something to think about and at least takes up one of our afternoons. In case we end up staying in our current place I've been thinking through ways to personalize it to better fit our needs and growing family. I just hope I don't come up with any creative ideas at 1:30 in the morning!

Please continue to pray that God fills us with peace (and that we stay sane) during this process. And, as always, I'll keep you posted.

Late at night

I'm still up and it's after 12:30. I should be sleeping but I can't stop my brain right now so I thought I'd let you in on my thoughts. Earlier this afternoon Justin and I went and spoke with a mortgage broker who helped us think through some financial options for buying a house. After having already gone through our budget at home, we were shown some numbers that humbled us. Even though Justin is anticipating a salary far beyond that of what the "traditional" social worker makes, it doesn't seem like enough to help us buy the type of home we'd want in our area.

That leaves us with a few decisions to make: do we continue to rent where we are or find some new temporary place? do we change our expectations? do we continue to pinch and stretch our budget to get something that we probably can't quite afford but hope Justin would get raises over the years to make it more manageable?

Of course, we still have to wait on hearing back on the job here in Missoula before we do anything beyond going and looking at houses with our realtor just to get an idea of what's available in Missoula in a spectrum of prices. Ultimately, we are continuing to trust in God's sovereignty. He has provided for us amazingly, despite not having any income since February, and we are not about to forget that now.

You would think that the peace we have received would help me get to sleep tonight but I don't think Junior got the memo that it's time to settle down. That's one of the reasons I couldn't get comfortable long enough in bed. Another reason is our dog Maggie continues to sneakily creep up on my side of the bed instead of staying at the bottom of it. I know, I know...the easy fix is to kick her off but you don't have those brown eyes turned toward you begging for mercy like I do every day. And so she stays on the bed, asleep, dreaming even, while I sit her typing.

That's enough babbling for now. I'm hoping a few games of solitaire might make my lids droopy.
